When should baby see the dentist for the first time?
By the first birthday, or within six months of the first tooth — whichever comes first. Here is why that sounds early, why it isn’t, and what actually happens when you walk in.

Pediatric dentist · Achrafieh, Beirut
Almost every parent who sits down with a one-year-old says some version of the same sentence: “I think we’re too early.” You’re not. If anything, most children in Beirut arrive late — the first appointment often happens at four or five, and by then we’re repairing something instead of preventing it.
The rule is simpler than it sounds
International paediatric dentistry guidance has said the same thing for years: a child should see a dentist by their first birthday, or within six months of the first tooth erupting — whichever comes first. Most babies get that first tooth somewhere between six and ten months, so in practice it lands around the first birthday.
Wondering about the timing?
There’s an interactive chart of all twenty baby teeth on the home page, with roughly when each one arrives and when it makes way for the permanent tooth. Every child runs on their own schedule — a few months either side of those numbers is perfectly normal.
Why so early, when there are only four teeth?
Because the first visit isn’t really an examination. It’s four other things.
A risk check. I look at the shape of the teeth and gums, the enamel quality, the way the jaws meet, and whether the tongue or lip attachments are restricting movement. Some of these are far easier to manage at one than at four.
A feeding conversation. Night bottles, breastfeeding to sleep, sippy cups carried around all day, juice in a bottle — these are the single biggest drivers of early decay, and they’re much easier to adjust before they’ve become the only way your child falls asleep.
A brushing lesson. Not a lecture — an actual demonstration on your actual baby, with the exact amount of toothpaste, the position that works, and what to do about the child who clamps their mouth shut.
A first, boring, friendly memory. A child who meets a dentist at one, while nothing hurts, learns that this is a normal room where nothing bad happens. A child who meets one at five with a toothache learns something very different.
Tooth decay is still the most common chronic disease of childhood worldwide, and it starts earlier than most parents expect. Cavities in two-year-olds are not rare, and they are not caused by bad parenting — they’re caused by a combination of bacteria, frequency of sugar, and enamel that is thinner and softer than an adult’s.
What actually happens in the room
Hello and a tour. Your child gets to walk around, press the button that moves the chair, meet the team, and pick a sticker before anything else happens.
The knee-to-knee look. For babies and toddlers, you sit facing me, knees touching, and your child lies back with their head in my lap and their body on yours. They can see you the whole time. It takes about sixty seconds.
The conversation. This is the long part. Feeding, brushing, teething, pacifiers, fluoride, what to expect over the next year.
The plan. A risk level, a recall interval — usually six months, sometimes three — and a short list of things to change at home. High-five on the way out.
Total time: fifteen to twenty-five minutes. No drill, no needle, no X-rays unless there is a specific reason.
Good to know
At this clinic, the first visit is free. It’s a meet-and-greet, not a treatment appointment — so if your child decides halfway through that today is not the day, that’s a perfectly acceptable outcome, and we try again next time.
Before the first tooth even arrives
Start earlier than you think. Wipe your baby’s gums with a clean, damp cloth once a day — usually easiest after the evening feed. It clears milk residue and, more usefully, it means that by the time a toothbrush appears, having something in their mouth is already normal.
The moment the first tooth breaks through, switch to a soft baby brush twice a day with a rice-grain smear of fluoride toothpaste. Not a pea — a smear.
How to prepare (and what not to say)
Book a morning slot. A hungry, tired toddler at 5pm is a different child from the one you had at 10am.
Don’t promise “it won’t hurt.” You’ve just introduced the idea of hurting. Say “the dentist is going to count your teeth” instead.
Don’t over-rehearse. One calm mention the day before is plenty. A week of preparation tells a child that this must be a big deal.
Bring the comfort object. The blanket, the bunny, the pacifier. Whatever normally works, works here too.
Let me do the talking. If your child stalls, the instinct is to jump in and explain. It helps more if you stay quiet and let them hear one voice.
Talk about the dentist the way you’d talk about the barber: an ordinary errand, on an ordinary day.
Don’t wait for the first birthday if…
Come in sooner
White, chalky or brown patches along the gumline, especially on the upper front teeth.
A bump, blister or swelling on the gum.
Pain, or night waking that started with no other explanation.
Any fall that hit the mouth — even if the tooth looks fine, even if it only turned grey weeks later.
No teeth at all by fourteen months.
If any of those sound like your child, message the clinic on WhatsApp and we’ll find you a slot this week.
Presque tous les parents qui s’assoient avec un bébé d’un an me disent la même phrase : « Je crois qu’on vient trop tôt. » Non.
L’examen genoux contre genoux.
